ESPN’s Chris Mortensen is projecting former New York Giants wide reciever Plaxico Burress as the number one pick in the annual Federal Penal System Supplementary Draft.
The announcement comes on the heels of the incarcerated football star’s revealing interview with “NFL Today” CBS football analyst Bill Cowher, who coached Burress during his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Seldom mentioned outside the draft war rooms of NFL franchises, the federal prison system has long been a keystone in the development system of the pro football league. This is so much the case that it’s been referred to before as the “Baby Raiders” and was the inspiration of the movie “The Longest Yard.”
Plaxico Burress issued the following statement through his jail warden:
“I will play again in the NFL. Doing my time in the penal league has been an invaluable once in a 20-years-to-life opportunity for me. I’ve been working out every day to prepare. NFL fans can be assured that I will hit the field guns blazing in 2011.”
Play for the Raiders? Please, just shoot me. Better yet, I’ll do it myself.
